Gunther Pohl - Biography

Gunther Pohl is a german Flutist and Professor of Flute. He was born on the 12th of September 1941 in Oppeln. Until his retirement in September 2006 he was Principal Flautist with the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra. His artistic and educational interests are characterised by lending a historically informed interpretation to performance on the modern Flute.

International Teaching Experience

Since 1974 Gunther Pohl has been giving Master Classes, in various countries, including Germany, Japan, Korea and South America. In 2004 he taught at the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music, the Osaka University of Arts, and the University of Music and Dramatic Arts Graz. In 2001 he was both soloist and teacher at the 15th Festival Internacional de Flautistas in Lima/Peru. Gunther Pohl’s international teaching experience has also been enriched by appearing as both soloist and teacher with the Tokyo Bach Academy and the Klausenburg Bach Academy, Romania, both of which were organised by the Stuttgart International Bach Academy (Helmuth Rilling).

Professor of Flute and Chamber music

In 2006 Gunther Pohl was appointed as Professor of Flute at the Dresden Academy of Music “Carl Maria von Weber”. Until September 2006 he fulfilled the same position at the Nuremberg-Augsburg Academy of Music. His teaching career in music conservatoires began in 1971 when he succeeded Paul Meisen at the Lübeck Academy of Music. In 1978 he was made an honorary Professor in Lübeck and in the same year he also took on a teaching post at the Würzburg Academy of Music.

Principal Flautist and Soloist

After a series of orchestral positions Gunther Pohl was appointed Principal Flute with the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra in 1973. This post with one of Germany’s leading orchestras has seen him tour most of the world. From 1976 to 1985 he was also Principal Flautist with the Bach-Collegium Stuttgart (Helmuth Rilling). As a soloist he has played concertos under the direction of, among others, Herbert Blomstedt, Eugen Jochum, Raphael Kubelik, and Horst Stein. His performance with chamber ensembles, notably the Linos Ensemble and various chamber groups of connected with the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra, has also seen him travel the world. In September 2006 Gunther Pohl was retired from the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra.

Study and success in competitions

Gunther Pohl grew up in Bonn and studied firstly with Hans-Peter Schmitz (Detmold Academy of Music) and later on a scholarship from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) with Gaston Crunelle (Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique Paris). He won prizes at various competitions, including the “Hochschulwettbewerb der Musikhochschulen in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland“ (1967), the International Flute Competition Friedrich Kuhlau (1970), and the ARD International Music Competition (1970).

Recordings

Gunther Pohl has made numerous recordings with all the most important German radio stations. His gramophone recordings of works by Ferdinand Ries (Sonata op. 169) and Johann Sebastian Bach (Trio Sonatas for Organ in the version for Flute and Harpsichord, BWV 525-530) were the first to be made of these works. These recordings were followed by many other gramophone and CD recordings.
